After being dismantled at the hands of Liverpool 5-0, Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas was given the boot. Spurs are currently sitting surprisingly well in the top third of the table, only a mere 8 points behind the league leading Gunners. Did Villas-Boas deserve this fate? Perhaps so, but probably not. Tottenham’s problems started the moment they let their ace Gareth Bale leave for Madrid in the most expensive transfer of all time. Bale’s loss sent seismic reactions through the Spurs camp, and those aftershocks are still being felt today. Losing a player of his caliber is devastating, and the Spurs have not been able to bring in a goal scorer who can remotely match Bale’s production.

A thrilling game at the Stadium of Light saw Sunderland eventually succumb to a 3-4 defeat at the hands of Chelsea. A fine strike from Jozy Altidore, as well as goals from captain John O’Shea and Phil Bardsley, who also scored an own goal, saw Gus Poyet’s side push Chelsea all the way before coming up slightly short. Sunderland fans will have taken heart from what was a much-improved performance though ahead of Tottenham’s visit this weekend.

After playing Manchester City and then Manchester United in consecutive weeks, Tottenham will be happy to travel to Fulham to take on the Cottagers who have lost six in a row in all competitions. But with a new man at the helm, Rene Meulensteen, it could prove to be a tricky affair. Here is what I would do if I was Andre Villas-Boas.

In my previous article I suggested 3 strikers that Tottenham could buy in January to help give them the firepower they need in front of goal. However, it’s all very well and good buying a striker but if they don’t have a supporting cast good enough to give him a consistent supply of chances, then what’s the point?

The Premier League season is heading for a big finale in terms of who will win as the title race is wide open because six or seven teams have the potential to win the league if it all goes their way. Tottenham Hotspur are one of those teams but they have struggled in recent weeks to establish any kind of title winning form after they were defeated 6-0 last weekend by Manchester City who are also very inconsistent at the moment.
