Vincent Janssen

Most Tottenham supporters have already written off Vincent Janssen as an expensive mistake by the club. The Dutch international came to White Hart Lane with a big reputation of scoring goals for fun. However, he is yet to get off the mark in key competitions for Spurs. Drawing a blank once again in the Champions League did little to change the attitude of Spurs supporters. Apart from the solitary goal against lower league Gillingham in the EFL Cup, Janssen has been looking a shadow of the player who grabbed 31 goals in just 49 appearances for AZ Alkmaar last season.

Now that Janssen is clearly low on confidence, it would take something astronomical or perhaps even a stroke of luck in order to get the player back on scoring fashion. There have been numerous instances of players managing to score bucket loads of goals in the Dutch league only to struggle at a top division like the Premier League. A closer look at the statistics of the player reveals that he actually comes good in the second half of the season. At an average of 1.2 goals per game in the second half of the campaign, Spurs fans can at least be hopeful that the player will start scoring for his new club.

Time appears to be not on the side of Janssen, as the Premier League gets up for the festive fixture season. It is one of the busiest times in the calendar and the involvement of Spurs in the Champions League pushes the squad to the maximum in terms of recovery times. One of the main reasons for signing Janssen was to reduce the workload on striker Harry Kane in anticipation of the Champions League. However, it is yet to take effect since Janssen has struggled to find the back of the net.

Apart from the upcoming festive fixture period, the transfer window is also about to reopen in January bringing a lot of possibilities to the Spurs team. Tottenham have already been linked with a couple of strikers with Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne a major transfer target, according to the Sun. Even though the 25-year-old could cost in the region of £50 million, Spurs may be willing to pay this fee if the club are still in contention for the league title come January. A spectacular start to the English league campaign sees the club just one point behind table leaders Manchester City after eight games.

Just like last season, scoring goals continues to be the major problem for Tottenham. They have the stingiest defence – conceding only four goals – in the league, but they have equally suffered up front with only 13 goals.
