Marcus Edwards Sparkles For England U-19

Tottenham Youth Sensation Marcus Edwards kept up his glowing reputation as a future superstar by inspiring England U-19 to a big win over Belarus. The promising attacker scored one and created 2 more as England defeated Belarus 5-1.

Arsenal youngster Chris Willock netted twice, and Manchester City duo Lukas Nmecha and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts also managed to get their names on the score sheet. The goal was Edwards’ second in 3 games at under-19 level. The Spurs youngster has netted previously for the under-16s, 17s, and 18s as well.

Marcus turned 18 in December and made his first-team debut for Tottenham at the age of 17 as a late substitute in the EFL Cup against Gillingham.

The young English starlet has scored 4 goals and 5 assists in 11 appearances in Premier League2, UEFA Youth League, and the EFL Cup combined. The numbers are quite impressive considering the fact that the player just recently turned 18. He is clearly mature beyond his age and might most probably be an early bloomer.

If given the right kind of opportunities, he would certainly fulfill his potential at a very young age.

Rightly so, Pochettino seems to have spotted the young lad’s abilities. Edwards has recently been training with the first team squad. This looks like a great move from Mauricio to give the 18-year old an experience of training with stars like Christian Eriksen, Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen etc.  This would surely help the boy learn a thing or two from the senior stars as the U-19 England star continues his development at White Hart Lane.

Though he has been given the chance to train with the senior team, it remains unlikely that he might get a look into the first team this season in the Premier League. However, he continues to show progress and is putting himself in a position to get a chance in the pre-season preparation for the 2017/18 season, to show what he is capable of.

If Marcus Edwards manages to convince Pochettino that he is ready for the big step up, then Spurs might well have unearthed another gem from their academy, after promoting Harry Winks to the first team and giving him opportunities.

  1. Sometimes, you have to give a youngster a leg up just to see what happens in the big time. I’m sure this will happen just look at how Winks has improved by playing in the first team
