Tottenham Hotspur’s contract negotiations with Toby Alderweireld seem to have hit a road block as the defender is demanding a pay parity equal to that of the likes of Harry Kane. Alderweireld has been one of the best defenders in the league this season and has earned rave reviews for the way he has played for Tottenham. He has been lethal at the back and has done well in leading the back line for Tottenham, which is the best in the league right now.
According to Daily Mail, Alderweireld is demanding Tottenham to double his current package of £50,000-per-week, to reach a 6-digit mark close to that of Harry Kane. The English phenomenon earns £110,000-per-week, which is the highest at the club. Now Alderweireld is set to be demanding the same as well, to commit his future to the club.
Tottenham have the best defensive record in the Premier League this season and have conceded only 22 goals so far in 34 league games. Spurs are 4 points behind leaders Chelsea and are hoping to catch up with the Blues before the final league game of the campaign. Whether or not if it will happen is a different story altogether, but one thing that’s for sure is Alderweireld is so crucial to achieving that dream.
The big Belgian has been solid at the back and it shows week in week out as to how important he is for Tottenham’s long-term success. He has thoroughly become a fan favourite and received a lot of support from the fans when he missed out on a place in the PFA Team of the Year.
Though the demand of earning the same as much as Harry Kane might be a bit overboard, he certainly deserves to be one of the highest-paid players at the club.
The report also claims that Tottenham are reluctant to agree to his demands. It might be right on the club’s part to think twice before accepting to pay such a big sum as it would send out wrong signals to other players within the club. There is every chance of players trying to take advantage of the club’s dependency on their star players and hence it would be important for Tottenham to handle the situation carefully.
Nevertheless, Alderweireld certainly deserves a good pay package and we’ll have to wait to see if the two parties arrive at a feasible conclusion.
