Kyle Walker seemed like one of the Tottenham untouchables a year ago, as the right-back was becoming an indispensable part of the first team. However, latest reports from The Standard claim that the defender is unsettled at White Hart Lane and that Spurs would consider the possibility of selling the player if they received an offer in excess of £35million.

Walker has been subjected to transfer interest from Manchester City, who are keen on replacing an ageing back four. The Englishman could effectively be the first choice at City, under Pep Guardiola, and it appears that the player’s head has been turned.

The defender signed a new contract with Spurs only back in September, but even then, he is understood to be one of the lowest earning top defenders in English football. Walker has a contract with the club until the summer of 2021, thus placing Spurs in a very strong position with regard to negotiating a contract.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has had a significant change in the team line-up over the last 2 games. Even for the key matches against Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final and the recent North London derby against Arsenal, Walker was on the bench. Kieran Trippier has been used as his replacement in the right-back spot to a reasonable degree of success. Walker’s last start was in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace towards the end of April.

Even as the club achieve a lot of success on a limited budget, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino and the chairman Daniel Levy will be aware that their players will be targeted by other clubs with the promise of significant wage increment. Even top stars like Dele Alli and Harry Kane make less than some of the defenders at top clubs.

Levy is likely to review the wage situation of the club in the near future, as there is a significant threat of star players being lured away. For the time being though, Spurs are confident that they will be able to find an effective replacement for players like Walker. The club are going places and top players would want to join the team.

  1. £35 million is a steal for Walker. Spurs should not sell for less than £45 million, especially if you’re selling him to deep pocketed top PL rivals.
