Pochettino Looks To Add More Quality At The Back As He Targets Dortmund’s Defensive Star

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham could be in the running to sign a player for an incredible price considering the inflated transfer market. The Independent reports that we are interested in bringing Borussia Dortmund defender Matthias Ginter in the summer.

The report adds that the 23-year-old German centre-back would be available for only £15 million, which would be an unbelievable price for anyone looking at the prices paid in the Premier League.

Ginter is one of the highest rated defenders in the Bundesliga and has the potential to get even better given his age. Not only can he play in the heart of defence, the youngster can also play as a defensive midfielder or as a right-back, thus providing Mauricio Pochettino with a host of options.

A challenger for the centre-back spots

One thing we have missed in the last two seasons is a quality cover for our centre-backs. Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld form the best pair in the Premier League but we do not have someone who can step into their shoes.

Kevin Wimmer has failed to impress in his limited playing time and even with Champions League and other cups dotting our fixture list next season, the Austrian is expected to leave us for regular football.

There also is a big question mark hovering over Toby Alderweireld’s future at the club, thus making Ginter a great and cheap option to sign up ahead of next season.

A lot of Bundesliga experience

For us, this would be a great purchase considering his age, talent, and experience. Even though Ginter is only 23, he has a lot of Bundesliga experience having played for Dortmund for three seasons and racking up 97 appearances in all competitions.

He even played for Freiburg for a few seasons and with his ability to play across the backline, we might have cover for the right-back slot as well, should Kyle Walker end up leaving the side.

It is true we haven’t always been great with our transfer activity under Poch but Ginter for £15 million would be a dream come true for any club.

Ginter could be the defensive signing we have been searching for years and he should solve our problem of not having quality backup players at the back for a number of years.
