As per reports from the Guardian, Tottenham are in for FC Schalke 04’s Max Meyer.

The report says that Spurs called up Meyer’s representatives last summer to politely enquire about the availability of the German midfielder. However, they were put off by the hefty price tag of £39 million that Schalke quoted back then.

However, they have renewed their interest in the attacking midfielder this summer. Spurs were informed by Schalke that Meyer could be available for a bargain price of £17.5 million. The knockdown price comes as a slight surprise, but one must forget that this is also because of the fact that Meyer refused to sign a contract extension on his deal that expires in a year, with the German club as recent as last season.

This will come as good news to Tottenham fans as Liverpool, their only other competitors for his signature have pulled out of the race to sign him after their recent capture of Mohammed Salah from Roma.

The 21-year-old Max Meyer has scored only 4 goals and made 2 assists for his side in all competitions last season. However, he averages 1.3 passes per game and 1.3 shots per game in all competitions. The midfielder has been a vital player for Schalke since the 2012/13 season and has amassed a total of 20 goals and 15 assists in all competitions over the past five seasons.

Meyer likes to play on the ball and hold on to it, he makes quick interchanging short passes and likes to dribble which make him a formidable opponent to face. He has a lot of time to develop into a fine talent given his relatively young age and he would strengthen Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs side considerably.

The youngster clearly has a lot to offer and should Spurs complete signing the 21-year-old they could be developing a future mainstay in the side. Meyer will benefit from the likes of Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane at Tottenham and could become a vital player for the club in the future.
