The contract stand-off between Tottenham and Toby Alderweireld does not seem to have any solution, at the moment. We have been reporting that the 28-year-old wants to sign a new deal with us but the biggest problem is how much he will earn.

Asked whether there was any update on the contract negotiations, Alderweireld said (via Evening Standard):

“No news that I know of so nothing… zero.”

Alderweireld has become one of the best central defenders in the Premier League and his understanding with fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen gave us the best defence in the competition last season.

It isn’t a surprise that the 28-year-old wants to be paid better and according to the Evening Standard, the Belgian would happily sign a new deal to stay with us should we double his wages, which currently is stated to be £50,000 a week.

That would make him one of the best paid players in the club but Daniel Levy is wary of the wage bill and is not too sure about giving Alderweireld the big money deal. There is concern as well given that the player could leave us for a snip at £25million in 2020, basis a clause in his current contract which comes into effect should he extend his stay until 2020.

Even though the defender would be 30 at the time, he still will have a few years of quality football left in him and that would probably be the worst situation for Spurs. Losing one of our best players for peanuts is criminal and Toby could end up playing for one of the other top sides in the Premier League.

We have the likes of Eric Dier or Cameron Carter-Vickers, who can step up and soften the loss of Alderweireld but that should not be a situation we have to deal with. The Belgian could still harp for a move away and we have seen the likes of Kyle Walker also walk away from the club for more money.

Breaking the pair of Vertonghen and Alderweireld would be detrimental to our side as well and we have to do everything we can to keep him. If it means offering him the deal he wants, then be it but we cannot allow him to leave the side.
