Serge Aurier

The Mirror carries a report that we have completed the signing of Paris Saint-Germain’s Serge Aurier. The news comes from French publication L’Equipe (h/t Mirror) which states that the deal is worth £23 million, which is a steal in this transfer window. It also claims that the player has successfully undergone a medical in Paris.

There is, however, one major clause that can scupper up the deal and that is regarding a work permit for the Ivory Coast defender.

Aurier was denied entry into the UK last season to face Arsenal in the Champions League after a conviction of assaulting a police officer, and a similar case could take place before he can move to North London.

There are a number of other clubs looking to sign the quality right-back with Juventus leading the charge and the Italians will be pressing to ensure they get their man too. Manchester United and Chelsea are the two clubs interested in him closer to home but we seem to have made the first contact and are favourites to land the right-back.

Aurier has fallen out of favour at PSG over the last year or so and the team also have to make a few sales to balance their books, after signing Neymar for a world record fee. Aurier is still only 24 years of age and will be a great signing for our side as we do need to have someone who can provide cover for Kieran Trippier.

Kyle Walker-Peters isn’t someone who can play regularly for the side as he still is young and needs to be protected at all costs. The youngster did do well in the win over Newcastle United but signing Aurier will provide us with another attacking outlet at the back and we could also try to push him up towards the attack.

The report suggests that the player’s agents and lawyers are already meeting up to find a solution to his problems and hopefully, he too will be a Spurs player before the end of the window.

It seems we are stuck doing business only for defenders as the signing of Davinson Sanchez was completed recently and we are leading the race to sign Juan Foyth of Estudiantes. Either way, as long as quality players come in, we would not be complaining.
