Tottenham Hotspur had an eventful transfer deadline day, with the arrivals of Serge Aurier, Fernando Llorente, and Juan Foyth exciting the fans. The joy could have been much more had we been successful in signing Andre Gomes from Barcelona.

Mauricio Pochettino was interested in signing the Portuguese midfielder and had a chance of snapping him up, only for the Catalans to pull out of the deal. Latest reports in the Daily Star indicate that the Argentine manager could go back for Gomes in January once the winter transfer window opens.

Gomes arrived at Barcelona only last season but has failed to impress. He was played out of position too which has crippled his confidence. After scoring just three goals in 47 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions, the midfielder has fallen down the pecking order and was looking for a temporary move to resurrect his career.

Barcelona too were willing to sell him but were unable to find a replacement and developed a cold feet on the deadline day. There was interest from West Ham United as well but Gomes was interested in moving to Tottenham, to work with Pochettino at the White Hart Lane.

Pochettino is still looking to strengthen the squad after overseeing the arrivals of Davinson Sanchez, Serge Aurier, Fernando Llorente, Juan Foyth and Paulo Gazzaniga in the summer.

Gomes, who is a Euro 2016 winner with Portugal, has been on Pochettino’s radar for some time now and will look to get back in for his signature.

Where will he fit in the side? Pochettino is blessed to have a very strong spine in the midfield, with the likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama and Harry Winks giving him a lot of options.

However, Pochettino will have to juggle his side in view of Champions League commitments and will be looking at reinforcements as he looks to be competitive in all four competitions. That could mean a role for Gomes, if he arrives, at some point in time.

With his experience and ability, Andre Gomes can be a vital backup for Pochettino. And who knows, he may end up forcing his way into the first team!
