Tottenham Hotspur are set to reward their talented midfielder Harry Winks with a new deal that would double his current weekly wages.
According to the latest reports in The Times, the midfielder, who recently earned his first international cap for England, could be given a new £40,000-a-week deal.
The 21-year-old has been impressing with the club for quite some time now and has earned plaudits for his debut performance in the 1-0 win against Slovenia on Sunday and is now in the frame to be selected in the Three Lions squad for next summer’s World Cup.
There is no doubt that Winks is one of the brightest young talents in the entire country. The youngster signed a five-year contract with the club only in February, after earning the confidence of manager Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine rates Winks very highly and feels that he is an integral part of his long-term plans. The midfielder hasn’t disappointed at all, by putting in consistent performances week-in-week-out.
Such has been his improvement that the Lilywhites are now contemplating an increased wage offer to make sure he remains settled at the club. The report indicates that the club is “aware that his current deal is not a reflection of his new-found status with club and country”.
Winks is a product of the Tottenham academy and made his Premier League debut last season. He has featured in 5 of his side’s 7 league games so far this season, in addition to earning a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad.
The reports of a new and improved contract are no surprise because it is the policy at Tottenham to reward emerging players who are making their mark at the first-team level.
We have already seen how frequently Dele Alli’s contract has been renewed and he could be in line for another increase as well. And then, there are the consistent improvements offered to Harry Kane – a clear sign of things that important players are always rewarded at the club.
