Most of the times clubs would be wary of their star players being coveted by competitors. There are certain agents who invoke similar feelings and top of that list would be the so-called super agent Jorge Mendes. No wonder then that there is a bit of unease at Tottenham Hotspur when their superstar Dele Alli was reported to have met Mendes.
According to reports in the Daily Mail, Mendes has recently met and held formal talks with a member of Alli’s family. The 21-year-old is currently looking for a new agency to represent him, as his current deal with Impact Sports Management is set to expire midway through next year.
It was reported a few months earlier that Alli was courted by both Mendes and Mino Raiola – the two big fishes of the football agent industry. Now with Mendes reported to have taken the next step, Alli may soon be making a decision.
Mendes already has a list of high-profile names on his roster including Cristiano Ronaldo, James Rodriguez, Diego Costa, Bernardo Silva, and Jose Mourinho.
Over the years, Mendes has established himself as the go-to-man for big moves. This year itself, he architected the moves of Rodriguez to Bayern Munich, Costa to Atletico Madrid, and Bernardo Silva to Manchester City in the summer.
So, what’s in it for Tottenham to worry about? The report specifically mentions about Mendes’ links with Real Madrid, who, incidentally, are interested in signing Alli.
However, Spurs have Alli tied to the club until 2022 and feel that they are in the driving seat should the Galacticos try to pry away the star midfielder. Knowing Daniel Levy, any club would be forced to fork out a high amount of money to sign Dele Alli.
Not that the club or fans can sit and not take notice of this development. Mendes is well-known for arm-twisting clubs to engineer a big-money move for his clients.
