Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a fresh move for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes after seeing Ross Barkley complete a move to Chelsea from Everton on Friday. Spurs were close to signing Gomes, 24, last summer and are ready to revive their interest in the Portugal international this month, according to the Daily Express.

The North Londoners are out of the Premier League title race already, but Mauricio Pochettino is looking for a top-4 spot, and he may need new arrivals to push for a Champions League place. A new midfielder appears to be a priority, but having seemingly backed away from Barkley before his move to Stamford Bridge, Pochettino feels other targets must be considered.

One of Poch’s potential targets is the £19.8m rated Gomes, who has barely played for the Catalan side this season. Pochettino is hoping to lure him to England after backing out of a deal in the summer transfer window. The Portuguese international may have starred for Benfica and Valencia before his 2016 move to Barcelona, but he struggled last term and has started just two La Liga games this season.

With a lack of football this term coupled with the arrival of Philippe Coutinho now, Gomes’s future looks very hazy and the midfielder looks keen to force a move away from Camp Nou.

Since moving from Valencia in 2016, Gomes has failed to live up to the lofty expectations at Barcelona but Pochettino is not coy to try and get the player’s career back on track.

As per Daily Express, Manchester United have also taken a look at the Portuguese international but have now dropped their interest. West Ham are also interested but don’t see the player joining them due to their lacklustre displays this season.

This leaves Tottenham as the sole runners to sign the midfielder. With Barcelona having spent a lot of money to bring in Coutinho from Liverpool, selling the Portuguese midfielder would not only free up squad space but also lighten the blow of the hefty Coutinho fee.

The fee would be an issue for Spurs, as Barcelona did reject a disappointing offer from Juventus this past summer. Josep Maria Bartomeu would only be persuaded by a good offer for Gomes.

Gomes is a talented midfielder but has failed to work his magic at Camp Nou. He surely would be a good signing for us, with the player adding a different dimension to our midfield.
