Tottenham

Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen has spoken about his partnership with Toby Alderweireld at the club. There has been a lot of speculation regarding the future of Alderweireld at Tottenham as there has been no breakthrough regarding his contract extension.

The 29-year-old is a Spurs player at the moment and his current deal has a one-year extension which will keep him at the club until 2020, according to Sky Sports. But that would also open him to a release clause of £25m, which would make him an easy target for some of the top clubs in the world.

Vertonghen and Alderweireld have played for Ajax previously and also for the Belgium national side but Vertonghen isn’t worried about his centre-back partner’s future at the moment. Vertonghen told Sky Sports News,

“Whenever we play we understand each other. When I left for Tottenham, Toby left for Atletico [Madrid] and Southampton but we found each other quite quick after that, so no stress.

“We’ve been playing together for a long time and we know how to play together, but I don’t want to speak about this because it might sound disrespectful to whoever is playing next to me or next to Toby in other situations.”

Injuries Have Hampered Alderweireld’s Season

Toby is one of the best in the world in his position but a number of injuries have curtailed his season so far. Alderweireld could not play in the CL games against Juventus, which saw us get eliminated from the Champions League.

Toby has been on the road to recovery but he has only played a couple of games since November. The former Ajax man would be a huge loss for us but we do have Davinson Sanchez to replace him as he has hit the ground running for us, forming a great partnership with Vertonghen.

Nevertheless, we should look to solve the situation and not let it drag on for too long. Losing Alderweireld would be a big blow but if we do sell him to a club outside the Premier League for a huge amount, that might not be a big enough loss for us, at least not for Daniel Levy.
