According to Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a potential £50m summer swoop for Ajax teenage starlet Matthijs de Ligt as contract talks with star defender Toby Alderweireld have come to a standstill.

The Dutch centre-back has caught the attention of some of Europe’s top clubs, including Barcelona and Arsenal, while Tottenham are also interested in the 18-year-old, who could cost as much as £50m, reports Football.London.

De Ligt only made his first-team debut for Ajax in November 2016 but the teenager has been a revelation this term, emerging as one of the most promising young defenders in Europe.

Knowing that a lot of clubs are vying for De Ligt’s signature, Spurs are looking to make a move early this summer to land one of Europe’s hottest properties. (Football.London)

Despite being just 18-years old, the defender has been an ever-present figure for the Dutch heavyweights this season. So far, De Ligt has made over 50 first-team appearances for the Amsterdam-based club, becoming the youngest ever captain in Dutch professional football.

De Ligt appeared for the Netherlands in last month’s friendly defeat against England but supplied two goals a couple of days later as the Oranje defeated Portugal 3-0. So far, the teenager has already won five international caps for the Netherlands.

As reported by Football.London, Spurs will face fierce competition for De Ligt’s signature at the end of the season but there is hope in our club’s base as we have formed a strong relationship with Ajax by signing a number of their players in recent years.
