Serge Aurier is a player Napoli are interested in, according to Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t Football.london). The Ivorian played 18 games for Tottenham last season but the report claims that he is Napoli’s second option behind another Premier League defender.

Napoli are also interested in Matteo Darmian of Manchester United and have Aurier as a back-up option should they fail to land the Italian. The Serie A side were trying to sign Santiago Arias but he seems set to join La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

Aurier might not have played too many games for us last season but selling him this late in the transfer window would be a major mistake. We do have Kieran Trippier performing well down the right but Aurier is quality and provides us with depth and cover for the Englishman.

The 25-year-old could even feature in the first game of the season against Newcastle United, given Trippier would only rejoin the Spurs camp after a few days.

The Ivorian might even have the chance of taking the first-team spot away from Trippier should he do well against the Magpies.

What would work in the favour of Aurier is that he has a complete pre-season under his belt with Mauricio Pochettino working extensively with him.

The Ivorian has displayed flashes of brilliance since joining us from PSG and this would be his chance to showcase his quality to the Tottenham fans.
