Former Swansea manager Carlos Carvalhal believes we need to defend better to achieve Premier League glory. The Spaniard was speaking on Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday show and was asked if Tottenham could win the title.
Carvalhal was quoted by Football.london as saying that we have a great team but only if we take a “few more risks”.
“They are one of the teams that take a few more risks, put the defenders too high when they’re playing and sometimes lose their balance, something that the teams that must be consistent to win all the games don’t and they can lose some points because of that.“
The former Swansea manager added that long balls are a problem for us and we are too offensive.
“Sometimes with a long ball to the channels they have some problems to adapt their positions, but they’re all the time playing on the offensive. They have everything to fight, but in my opinion to be more consistent, this team has to be more ready when they lose the ball.”
Carvalhal was quick to suggest that this was a positive criticism and added that we can fight for the Premier League crown by defending better.
Tottenham do have one of the best attacks in the country and our defence is a quality one too. We have a World Cup winner in Hugo Lloris starting in goal and our defence has two of the best centre-backs – Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.
Spurs have become regular top-four contenders under Mauricio Pochettino and with the team looking in decent touch already, this season could see us win a trophy.
