Spurs opinion: Missing out on Tanguy Ndombele could be great for Tottenham

Tanguy Ndombele is one of the hottest properties coming from Ligue 1. The 22-year-old has been excellent at Lyon over the past 20 months or so and has been linked with Tottenham (h/t Mirror).

The combative midfielder would be a great signing under Mauricio Pochettino, and his current manager ever claimed Ndombele could be a “new Pogba” (h/t Mirror).

Spurs sold Mousa Dembele in the winter window, and all signs suggest that Ndombele could fill that role, however, the Mirror adds that the Frenchman could cost close to £90m.

The report further claims that teams such as Manchester City, Manchester United, Juventus, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are linked with the Frenchman and the Lyon president was open to selling Ndombele to PSG.

Spurs need to be smart with their spending

Splashing £90m on Ndombele could see one midfielder come into the team, but Tottenham have to be smart regarding their transfer dealings.

It would be difficult to outbid the likes of PSG, Barcelona or even Manchester City, and losing out on Ndombele could help us concentrate on getting the right players at the club.

Spurs haven’t made a move in two transfer windows, and the club seemed to be signing non-British players most recently.

There is one name linked with a move to Spurs (h/t Daily Star) and the English midfielder has been doing a great job at Aston Villa this season.

Jack Grealish was linked to the Premier League side in the summer, but could not join Mauricio Pochettino’s side (h/t Sky Sports).

Grealish might not be as high profile a player as Ndombele is at the moment, but one thing he has going for him is the knowledge of the English game. The midfielder has played a couple of years in the Championship and has been one of the Villans’ best players.

Another player we have been linked with recently is Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes (h/t Sun). The Portuguese star is on loan at Everton and has done a decent job for the Toffees.

Gomes took time to acclimatise to the Premier League but has been great under Marco Silva despite Everton’s ups and downs.

Targeting either of the pair makes more sense at the moment given that they know the English conditions. Additionally, spending close to £90m on a player that hasn’t played in England is a bit of a risk and we have seen the club get burnt over some signings.

Vincent Janssen, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Roberto Soldado are some examples of foreign players not cutting it in at Spurs.
