Spurs opinion: Mauricio Pochettino should avoid signing Barcelona attacker Malcom

Malcom’s transfer from Bordeaux to Barcelona in the summer certainly was a talking point from the summer window.

The Mirror reports that the Brazilian was close to joining AS Roma before Barcelona came in at the last minute and signed the attacker up.

Malcom had a wonderful season with the French giants, however, he has struggled to perform at the Nou Camp this season.

The 22-year-old has just three goals to his name in the campaign and hasn’t played many games for the Catalans either.

Marca (h/t Mirror) reports that Barcelona are willing to let go of the Brazilian but want a whopping £60million.

The report adds that Tottenham were interested in the Brazilian last summer, and Duncan Castles claimed that Spurs are keeping an eye on the attacker, however, moving for the 22-year-old would be a major risk for Tottenham.

An expensive risk for Mauricio Pochettino

The Argentine manager has been burnt before when it comes to big money signings. Vincent Janssen will be etched in Pochettino’s CV as one of his big transfer failures, and the price that Barcelona are asking for Malcom is too high.

The Brazilian hasn’t been in scintillating form for the Catalans and the Mirror adds that Barcelona signed Malcom for £37million.

Tottenham need to be wary of their finances in the summer and splashing £60m on a player that has struggled is too big a risk.

Spurs have to keep an eye on their spending as they have moved into a new stadium, and we have to be smart in our transfer dealings after not buying players for two transfer windows.

Tottenham need to sign players that have a better chance of hitting form from the get-go. Lucas Moura was another example of a signing taking time to adjust to the Premier League, however, he joined mid-season and looked a better player after a proper pre-season under his belt last season.

Erik Lamela is a decent player that knows the Premier League well while Son Heung-min has been great for us. Spurs need to move for a player that can give competition to our current crop or is better than what we have at hand, and Malcom seems neither at the moment.

Tottenham’s chairman, Daniel Levy, claimed that Spurs will have money to spend in the summer, and it will be interesting to see who we sign once the transfer window opens.
