Latest Spurs news: Trippier hints at issues behind the scenes at Tottenham leading to exit

Tottenham sold Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid in one of the surprise transfers of the summer.

The Spurs defender had a tough campaign in the previous season and made some mistakes for the club.

The English defender also struggled for form but remained as our No.1 right-back due to Serge Aurier’s injuries.

The 28-year-old became an England regular during his time at Spurs and was excellent at the 2018 World Cup too.

However, Trippier has hinted that there were some issues which led him to leave the club (h/t Evening Standard):

“I think it was time for me to change and move on.

“I don’t necessarily mean that I needed to move on, but things happened behind the scenes at Tottenham, which I don’t really want to go into, but I needed to move on from that.”

Trippier needed a new challenge

The Englishman has had a decent start to his career with Atletico and even played in the 7-4 win over Real Madrid recently.

Moving away from England should reduce the spotlight on Trippier, and he could get back to the basics under a manager such as Diego Simeone.

Spurs have two senior right-backs after Trippier’s sale and we should see more of Kyle Walker-Peters in the upcoming campaign.

The 22-year-old needs to take his chances after Trippier’s exit while Aurier also needs to stay free from problems and fight for the spot.
