Latest Spurs news: Pochettino claims Levy made a mistake regarding closure of English transfer window

Mauricio Pochettino claims Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy believes he made a mistake in closing the transfer window early.

The Mirror reports that Tottenham voted in favour of closing the English transfer window early although the European window is open until 2nd September.

Premier League clubs cannot buy players until the winter window though they can sell to foreign clubs till 2nd September.

This has left some clubs with problems, such as Tottenham, where Christian Eriksen is out of a contract at the end of this season.

Pochettino claimed that Levy and other Premier League clubs’ heads knew they made a mistake (h/t Mirror):

“I wasn’t in agreement, but at that moment they believed that was best for the clubs.

“But I think he [Levy] and a lot of people now realise it was a massive mistake. I hope that we fix the problem for the next season.

“I think we need to go back and operate in the same way that they operate in Europe because I think it’s massive when you go to compete in the Europa League or Champions League.”

The transfer window has put Premier League clubs under pressure

The early closure of the window has given foreign clubs an advantage as they can conclude deals until the end of the month.

Christian Eriksen

Losing Eriksen now would be a major blow to the club, and the worst part is we cannot replace the Dane until the next transfer window.

The big European clubs can still strengthen their teams for a couple of weeks, and if the Premier League is to compete with the other leagues, they have to ensure that the transfer window is in sync with the rest of the leagues.
