Andy Townsend makes his feelings clear about Tottenham Hotspur loanee Timo Werner

talkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend has made it clear that he doesn’t believe Timo Werner is up to the task of being a regular starter for Tottenham Hotspur. Despite Werner’s loan move from RB Leipzig in the winter transfer window raising eyebrows, especially given his underwhelming stint at Chelsea, Townsend remains sceptical about the 28-year-old’s ability to make an immediate impact.

While Werner struggled to find his form at Chelsea, his versatility has been a standout feature during his time at Tottenham. Often deployed on the left wing rather than his preferred centre-forward position, Werner has still managed to make a significant impact, particularly from that flank. It’s worth noting that he flourished in a similar role for RB Leipzig under Marco Rose before making the switch to North London.

The German international has netted a couple goals and given three assists in 11 Premier League matches for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

TalkSPORT Pundit claims Werner is not good enough to start for Spurs.

Andy Townsend spoke on talkSPORT about Timo Werner:

“I mean, listen, I don’t think he is anywhere near their best team, him. He is a sub, isn’t he? He is 10 minutes – Timo Werner.

“I thought he was an astonishing signing when he arrived if I am being honest. And I can understand there are certain players you think, ‘Well, he has played Premier League football before, he knows what it is all about, he knows the demands of it’.”

“But I would never see Timo Werner going in as a regular starter for Spurs if they want to go where Ange wants to take them.”

While he insists Timo is not a starter, the 28-year-old has had a massive impact since his loan move. He has been a constant threat while also helping out in defence. The player might not be the most spectacular but one cannot fault his commitment to the club’s cause.

While Townsend may doubt Timo Werner’s ability to consistently start for Tottenham Hotspur, it’s important to recognize Werner’s potential to leave a significant impact on the game, even when coming off the bench. Additionally, his versatility across multiple positions provides Tottenham with a valuable asset moving forward.
