Tottenham preparing a loan-to-buy deal for Djed Spence

According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur is making arrangements for a loan-to-buy deal for the Englishman defender Djed Spence after some decent performances in the latter half of the recent season.

In the summer transfer window, the 23-year-old will rejoin Serie A team Genoa, where negotiations are underway for a £7 million loan-to-buy agreement. Under some circumstances, the agreement can become a permanent relocation.

The former England U21 international played in 16 Serie A games for Genoa last season, starting half of them and substituting for the others. Playing on both wings in defence and midfield, Spence has shown his versatility and adaptability.

Tottenham wants to recover as much of their original outlay as they can. Spurs signed Spence for €14.7 million from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022. The defender has only appeared in six games for the Lilywhites since his arrival, playing a total of just 41 minutes.

Genoa are not looking very keen to sign the 23-year-old permanently. They will most likely agree to the loan-to-buy deal and certain conditions regarding the number of appearances and starts might trigger a complete transfer.

With Spence impressing the decision-makers at the Serie A club, he should be confident of sealing a permanent move over the course of the 2024/25 season. Everything will depend on how he performs in the upcoming campaign.

Spence will need to unlock his true potential soon

Given how well Spence performed the previous season, Genoa is clearly serious about securing his services moving forward, as seen by the continuing discussions.

The more discussions that are taking place, the more probable it seems that Spence will stay in Italy and maybe have a big influence in Genoa. The defender must improve and perform well to trigger the permanent relocation clause.
