Do Spurs need Eze? Sky Sports presenter debates potential record signing

Tottenham Hotspur FC have been linked with a move for Crystal Palace star boy Eberechi Eze as the North Londoners look to raise the ceiling of the roster at Ange Postecoglou’s disposal. While most of the Spurs faithful will be excited to have a player of the England international’s capabilities at the N17, Sky Sports presenter Dan Bardell thinks that the Lilywhites do not need the 25-year-old maestro. However, he goes on to acknowledge that Eze would start for Ange if he were to sign for Tottenham.

The North Londoners are “scheduled to meet representatives” to discuss a possible move to the N17 this summer, per Football Transfers. This transfer could see the club breaking their transfer record to secure Eze’s signature.

While the club ponders whether to break the bank to sign Eze, Sky Sports and TalkSPORT journalist Dan Bardell argues the presence of James Maddison as a reason not to consider signing the Crystal Palace maestro. He suggests that the Eagles might keep hold of the former QPR star and that Tottenham and Eze don’t fit together.

Eze has been in splendid form in the recently concluded season with 11 goals and 4 assists in the Premier League. Comparatively, Maddison scored four goals and had nine assists in the English top tier last season.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Bardell said:

“You would say Eze’s best position is as a number 10, but Tottenham have got Maddison there, whom they spent a lot of money on last summer, although his form fell off towards the end of the season.”

“I would say that Eze is ready for a move away from Crystal Palace, but they do feel quite stable.”

“Spurs had a great season, finishing fifth, but I just think that at the end of the season that Palace had under Glasner, they may be able to keep hold of their team this summer.”

“I would argue that Tottenham and Eze aren’t matches, but he’s such a good player that if he does join, he would probably be straight into the starting XI.“

While Dan is of the opinion to put trust in Maddison, his inconsistencies with injury have caused problems at the N17 last season, and it would not be smart to have your foot in a similar situation twice. Moreover, James has not been his ‘start of the season’ self following his return from his last injury, and a transfer like this would also be a wake-up call for him.

This would include a culture of growth and competition among the squad. It is to be seen if the club agrees to pay the massive £60m fees that a transfer for Eze would command.
