Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino might be feeling the heat after the exit from the UEFA Champions League. A dire showing in the competition has led to Tottenham now fighting for a place in the Europa League and questions have been asked about the side playing at Wembley as they are due to shift to a new stadium soon.

Spurs’ new stadium will make it one of the best in England but a big worry for many is the financial effects it will have on the club. We all remember how Arsene Wenger had to be precise and economical with some of his signings when the Emirates was being made but Pochettino stated that the London club could still sign the best players once the stadium is made.

“The first thing (to compete with the Premier League giants) is to end the construction of the stadium,” Pochettino said to Marca.

“It will be the best in England and one of the best in Europe. We will grow with the stadium and it will help up to stabilise as one of the top in England. It will be a source of income and we will be able to sign great players and have the best in the Academy. The Tottenham potential is in line to be among the greatest.”

The Argentine also stated that the club would be behind a few rivals while the new stadium is being built and claimed they have to be smart with their decision making.

“It’s true that, with the construction of the new stadium, it limits the possibilities of investing more in the players, giving other teams like City, Arsenal, Chelsea, United or Liverpool the advantage. But this is another project, another story. What we must do is make smart decisions to be competitive and fight with clubs like those mentioned above.”

Spurs doing pretty well in the Premier League

Despite being knocked out of the European competition, Spurs are still in the fifth spot – four points clear to Manchester United. Even this season they did bring in a few big money signings in Vincent Janssen, Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko but only Wanyama has starred for the side.

“With some luck we could be now in first place. If we maintain the level and improve some aspects, we are sure to be up there.

“The mentality and work of the whole club is fundamental for success and all of our efforts are aimed at reducing the financial distance. What I have is a group of players who love to fight and compete for Tottenham and so far no one has beaten us. It shows that we can already compete on the pitch.”

Spurs are not very far from the top of the table and if they can convert the draws into wins for the rest of the campaign, Pochettino could have another chance of Champions League glory next season.
