Tottenham failed to show up, again, on the big stage as their European hopes were dashed for yet another season. The London side knew that they had to defeat Gent by two clear goals after losing the first leg 1-0 but were held to a 2-2 draw at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side started brightly and took a deserved lead through Christian Eriksen but Harry Kane scored an own goal and made it 1-1 in the first half.

The need for cool heads was an important requirement in the game but Dele Alli showed his immaturity by getting sent off after a ridiculous challenge in the first half.

Tottenham still tried to get going and Victor Wanyama scored in the second half to give them hopes of making it into the next round but Jeremy Perbet scored to take Gent through to the next round.

Wembley does seem to be a curse for Spurs and here are the player ratings for the side.

Hugo Lloris – 6/10

The French keeper couldn’t really do much to stop the two goals that he conceded but he didn’t have much to do apart from that.

Eric Dier – 5/10

Dier didn’t do much wrong but he was partly responsible for the second goal that Tottenham conceded.

Toby Alderweireld – 7.5/10

Alderweireld was the best centre-back from the three being played and didn’t do much wrong in the game.

Jan Vertonghen – 7/10

Vertonghen did alright as well, he did have a couple of crazy shots which went wide when he could have passed to another player.

Kyle Walker – 7/10

The Englishman was great bombing forward and his link up play with Eriksen was great too.

Victor Wanyama – 7.5/10

Wanyama didn’t have the best of first halves as he gave the ball away a number of times but he showed his quality in the second half when he stepped up.

Mousa Dembele – 7/10

One of the few players that stepped up when Tottenham went down to 10 men, the Belgian was good for the side and was replaced on the 75-minute mark.

Ben Davies – 6.5/10

Davies looked good on the ball, after a few torturous outings. He could have done more in attack though for Tottenham.

Christian Eriksen – 7.5/10

Eriksen gave Tottenham the lead in the game and also created the second but his finishing wasn’t the best on the night.

Dele Alli – 2.5/10

Can’t say much about Alli, he let everyone down on a night where he should have starred.

Harry Kane – 5/10

Try as he might, Kane couldn’t change the fortunes of the team and he did miss a few chances and scored an unfortunate own goal.

Substitutes:

Heung-Min Son – 6.5/10

Another player that had an off day at Wembley, Son had a chance to score but blew it.

Harry Winks – NA

The youngster tried to do his best for Spurs but failed to get them the goal that they needed, even though he had a decent chance late on.

Vincent Janssen – NA

The striker was brought on late in the game but couldn’t help Spurs out.
