Chelsea might have won their FA Cup semi against Tottenham 4-2 but the ugly side of football showed its head again as upsetting chants were made against the White Hart Lane club.

Videos have emerged that a number of Chelsea fans had gathered near the Green Man pub near Wembley and sang out “f*** the Pope and the IRA” and an anti-semitic song.

Another video published online reportedly saw the fans singing, “We’ll be running around Tottenham with our willies hanging out, singing I’ve got a foreskin, haven’t you? Have you f***.”

That is seen as a reference to the Jewish connections that the club have and was made to taunt the supporters of the Lilywhites. This isn’t the first time fans have been targeted and certainly continues a worrying trend which highlights the issue of racism and in the world of football.

Clubs and footballing bodies have tried to clamp down on such chants and even prior to this highly anticipated clash many authorities pleaded with the fans to not direct racist abuse and chants to one another.

Charities Action against Discrimination (AAD) and the Board of Deputies of British Jews (BOD), had warned the fans ahead of the game.

The groups added that they would be working with the police and ensure that the people involved are caught and punished.

The statement read:

“AAD, together with the BOD have called on Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC, The FA and Metropolitan Police to come to together and take a stand against racist singing and chanting ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final between the two clubs.

“AAD and BOD believe the offensive racist chants and songs have absolutely no place in society and would be met with severe reprimands and punishment if displayed in any other walk of life.”

Tottenham still have a chance of winning the league but incidents like this take the sheen away from the game of football and hopefully such incidents will not be repeated soon.
