Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld has taken a dig at Arsenal and has said that they do not need any extra motivation to beat the Gunners on Sunday. He also said that Tottenham are totally focused on closing the gap on Chelsea and that they will also look to hold on to their current position in the table while trying to go for the league title.

Last season, Tottenham lost to Newcastle United on the final day to agonisingly finish below Arsenal at 3rd place after looking like the favourites to finish 2nd below Leicester City.

This season though, it doesn’t look like it’s happening as Tottenham are comfortably placed 2nd in the table, with a difference of 14 points between the teams. However, Arsenal have a game in hand on Spurs. Arsenal have hardly been competitive this season and this might finally be the season where the powers shift from Arsenal’s grasp.

Alderweireld seems right. There is no need for any added motivation to beat the Gunners on Sunday as the title push itself is enough to keep the boys motivated enough. The Belgian has been a rock at the back for Spurs this season and is arguably the best centre-half in the league right now. He certainly has to be at his best if Tottenham are to come out on top on Sunday.

Toby said,

“It is a massive game. We are going to try and win at the Lane. It is going to be a special day and it is up to us to get three points. Beating Arsenal to finish above them is extra motivation but you do not need extra motivation on Sunday.”

Chelsea had moved 7 points clear of Tottenham when they beat Southampton in the mid-week. However, Spurs responded with a determined performance next day against Crystal Palace, beating the Eagles 1-0, thanks to a Christian Eriksen stunner.

Alderweireld added: “We want to put pressure on them. Of course we want to catch them but we want to defend the second spot as well. The only thing we can do is try to win our games. Against Palace, we fought as a team and did very well. We played in a very adult way. We did not give them any chances and we know we have the quality and the creativity up front to make the difference.”

“It showed we are not going away in the title race. We try to win our games .We know it is going to be difficult but that is all we can do. This was a good response after the FA Cup semi-final. We are back in it. We showed character after Saturday and are back on track. That is very important, if you get a setback to respond immediately.”

The game on Sunday will be crucial and surely, the boys look motivated for the task ahead. Hopefully, they get it done.
