Former Tottenham Hotspur flop Yuri Berchiche is on the verge of completing a big move to French giants Paris Saint-Germain, according to reports from French outlet Le Parisien (via TalkSport).
The full-back, who currently plays for La Liga club Real Sociedad, is all set to complete a £12million move to Unai Emery’s side in the summer. The report also claims that Berchiche will sign a four-year contract with Les Parisiens.
Berchiche was with our club for three years, after he joined our academy from Spanish club Athletic Bilbao in 2007. He was a part of the Tottenham U-18 side that won the Eurofoot Tournament in Belgium and was named as the “Player of the Tournament”.
However, he could not force his way into the first team and was sent out on several loan spells, with the likes of League One side Cheltenham Town and La Liga team Valladolid.
In the summer of 2010, Tottenham released the speedy left-back, who was 20 years old at the time, without a single first-team appearance for the club. However, his career has seen an upturn since his exit from the White Hart Lane.
Having been with third division side Real Union for two years, Sociedad snapped him up and loaned him out to Eibar for two seasons, where he continued his growth in prominence. Having been retained since the 2014-15 campaign, the 27-year old has now grown into an important member of the Sociedad squad.
Last season, Berchiche notched up a total of 41 appearances for the Spanish side, scoring 3 goals and chalking up 6 assists to his name. There were reports that La Liga giants Barcelona were also interested in the defender, but a move to Paris beckons for the Spaniard.
Things may not have worked out for Berchiche in North London, but it has been a wonderful journey for the full-back, after having been released by us 7 years ago, to go on to represent one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Maybe he will get a chance to face Tottenham in the UEFA Champions League in the coming seasons.
We wish him all the very best for his new journey in France!
