Former West Ham United forward Dean Ashton is of the opinion that Tottenham should consider making a move for Celtic forward Moussa Dembele, who is on the wish list of several clubs in the summer transfer window. It has been a quiet summer at Tottenham so far, as the club are yet to make any noteworthy signing in this window.
Much to the dismay of fans, Kyle Walker has left the club to join Manchester City. One of the key areas that need attention in the Spurs squad is of a backup striker, and Ashton believes that Dembele can provide an excellent alternative for the 23-year-old England international.
Dembele has been a top centre-forward in the Scottish Premiership and he finished last season with an incredible return of 17 goals in just 20 starts. Celtic had managed to sign him on a free transfer from Fulham in the summer of 2016. Now, the club stands to make a healthy profit on the player.
Marseille are thought to be one of the key clubs interested in taking him, as signing the French international will be a sign of intent from the French outfit. The Sun reports that the club are plotting a £20million bid for the starlet. However, the entry of Tottenham could significantly change the dynamics, as Dembele is likely to prefer playing in the Premier League and Champions League.
Even though Dembele is at the age when he should be playing regular football in order to make even bigger strides, Ashton feels that the forward will have enough opportunities to shine at Spurs considering that we have already secured Champions League group stage football for the upcoming campaign. Speaking to talkSPORT, the former West Ham forward, Ashton, said:
“Moussa Dembele, if that is true – the talk with Marseille – Spurs should, without a shadow of a doubt, be in for someone like him.”
Manager Mauricio Pochettino is very keen on bringing the best out of Vincent Janssen, who turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments last season. The Dutchman failed to settle and did not even show signs of being remotely good enough. Bringing in Dembele could turn out to be an excellent piece of business for the club as him competing with Janssen would get the best out of both the strikers.
