Pau Lopez is one player that just does not seem to be leaving the sight of Tottenham, even after his failed move to the club in the summer. As you all will remember, the Spaniard was one goalkeeper we were linked with in the transfer window but could not strike a deal. We later signed Paulo Gazzaniga as our third-choice keeper.
Even though Lopez was on loan with us last season and it looked like a deal with Espanyol would be completed sooner rather than later, the keeper went back to the Spanish club and is now the first-choice.
There is more confusion on the way, as the player will become a free agent at the end of the season and that will start a three-way battle for the highly-rated Spanish keeper.
Sport Witness claims that Tottenham will be in the running for a player that Mauricio Pochettino rates and that he will try to sign him up at the start of next season. A couple of other clubs are also interested in the Espanyol star, with Brighton & Hove Albion and Watford looking to add some competition for their goalkeeping positions.
The other problem that might take place in us trying to sign him up is the fact that Lopez would not be the first-choice at Tottenham, with Hugo Lloris, Michel Vorm and Gazzaniga at the club already.
Lopez is playing for the first-team at his current La Liga club and we cannot rule him out from signing a new contract with Espanyol, as the youngster keeps more clean sheets for the La Liga side.
It does seem unlikely that we would be looking to sign another keeper in the next window, unless we see Michel Vorm or someone else leave the club. Lloris is still one of the best in the world and he does have some quality years left in him while Gazzaniga just joined us in the summer.
Lopez might probably turn his career at Espanyol and become a star for them but for now, it doesn’t make a lot of sense for us to sign him up.
