Andre Gomes

Tottenham were linked with a number of players last summer window with aot of midfielders on the list.

One player heavily linked with a move to London was Andre Gomes, the Barcelona midfielder. The Portuguese might not be the player that is most liked at the Catalan club and it was a bit of a surprise seeing him stick around there for another season.

However, he has played a number of games this season for the club but that has not been enough to ensure the 24-year-old’s stay at Barcelona. The agent of the player has now come out and stated that there was a lot of interest from us and that we do want to sign the midfielder up some time in the future.

Mundo Deportivo (h/t Calciomercato) carries the report that says the future of Gomes is still in doubt and a number of clubs are monitoring the situation of the Euro 2016 winner. Juventus, the Serie A champions, are also looking to sign the midfielder up and Juve could be a great option for Gomes given than Serie A is not as dynamic as La Liga or the Premier League.

Jorge Mendes, the player’s agent, is aware of the interest from both Juventus and us and it is a bit of a surprise to learn that we have actually not put in a bid for the versatile midfielder.

The 24-year-old would not cost a lot in the given market and the fact that we have a lot of injury issues in central midfield certainly makes us think as to why we didn’t sign Gomes.

Gomes has played seven times for Barcelona this season but has started just one game. The 24-year-old has not scored or assisted a goal this season but that could all change should he move to Tottenham, as he would be under one of the best coaches in the world, Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine has worked wonders with a number of players and hopefully he can do the same with Gomes, should he join us.
