Tottenham Hotspur are looking to strengthen their options up front and could be set for a battle royale with two other Premier League rivals for the signature of an Atletico Madrid striker.

According to reports in the Spanish media outlet Don Balon (via talkSPORT), Spurs are looking to add Kevin Gameiro to their squad in January. The French striker is in demand and it is being reported that Tottenham are trying to lure him to the White Hart Lane during the winter window.

However, we reportedly have competition from England, as Newcastle United and Everton are also looking to sign the striker.

So, how good is Gameiro? In this era of hyped up players and over-the-top transfer wages, I think Gameiro is someone who goes under the radar. The former Paris Saint-Germain man scored 12 goals in 31 league matches last season.

His form has made some of the top clubs sit back and take notice while he became a key player in Diego Simeone’s side. However, his form nosedived this season and he has struggled for game time, starting only three times so far.

I think his opportunities to lead the attack will further dry up once Atletico bring in Diego Costa in the January window. As you all know, the striker has been signed by Atletico but are prevented from playing him because of a transfer ban that ends in January.

It is being reported that the arrival of old favourite Costa could push the 30-year-old Gameiro further down the pecking order, although the form of fellow French striker Antoine Griezmann has not been assuring. Reports say that Atletico may not be averse to selling him, which is a boost to all the three English clubs.

Do we really need Gameiro? I think a backup striker is one thing that has been pinching Mauricio Pochettino for long. None of the signings excelled in that role and the latest one to flop is summer arrival, Fernando Llorente. The Spanish striker is yet to score a goal, although it is too early to write him off. However, I strongly feel that Pochettino needs to sign a back-up to ease Harry Kane’s burden.

Everton and Newcastle have struggled for goals and signing a striker will be their top priority. So I believe they would be going all-out for Gameiro.

Do you think Gameiro should be signed in January?
