Tottenham are raising their game with crunch talks planned with key first-team player

Toby Alderweireld

Tottenham fans could be in for a bonanza regarding the contract extension of a key player. While we have been hearing news reports that Harry Kane would be given a huge contract extension, another player in need of that is Toby Alderweireld.

The Independent claims that the Belgian will be meeting Daniel Levy regarding his stay at Tottenham and that could lead to a solution for his contract stand-off with the club. A number of top European teams have kept tabs on Alderweireld, with Barcelona being linked with a move for the former Atletico Madrid man.

The report goes on to say that Alderweireld wants to be on a par with some of the best-paid players at Tottenham. Even though we can extend his contract by another year – until 2020, we want to sign him up for a few more years to come.

Should we extend his contract by another year, thanks to the clause, Aldy could leave our club for £25m, which would be such a cheap price tag for one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Truth be told, it is a bit of a surprise seeing this drag on for so long but Mauricio Pochettino recently stated that he is not worried about the contract issue and that we should trust Levy, as the chairman gets a chance to show his magic regarding contract stand-offs.

A Player We Cannot Afford To Lose On The Cheap

Aldy might be out injured at the moment but there is no denying that he is one of our best players. Along with Jan Vertonghen, he has formed one of the best centre-back pairings in the world. Given that we play with three central defenders at the back, it is more imperative that we keep hold of Aldy as finding a replacement will not be easy either.

We should have dealt with his contract problem a few months ago but for some reason, we have stalled on this issue and it is about time we give him the pay and contract that he wants.

Losing him on the cheap would be the worst thing to do but it does seem like Levy and team are getting their act together, which can only mean good news for us and Alderweireld.

  1. It’s funny how the club have waited for the transfer window to start talking about giving players they already have a new contract, couldn’t they do this after the window has closed or even better still it should have been done before so other clubs know we aren’t selling our best players, we’re in the market for some even better players. Maybe this isn’t the case, we seem to be really slow when it comes to signing, if we keep dragging our feet, all of our so called targets will have been signed by someone else. Not a lot changes.
