Tottenham on alert as Barcelona get ready to sell €35million midfielder in the summer

Tottenham Hotspur have been alerted with the news that Barcelona are ready to listen to offers for Andre Gomes in the summer, as per reports. The news has also put Spurs’ London rivals, West Ham United on the alert. Spurs and West Ham were embroiled in a battle for Gomes in the summer of 2017, as reported by the Telegraph then.

However, a move for the Portuguese midfielder away from Camp Nou failed to materialise and he has since played some part under Ernesto Valverde in taking Barcelona at the top of the table this season. Gomes joined Barcelona from Valencia in the summer of 2016, but has endured a difficult time at the Nou Camp and wants to play regular football.

AS claim the Catalan giants are weighing up a sale for the midfielder at the end of the campaign and that could see both West Ham and Spurs battle for the player’s services. The Portuguese international has failed to live up to the billing at the Camp Nou in a season and a half and has been deemed as a flop by many.

Gomes was a hit at Valencia and his impressive performances had made Barcelona pay €35million plus variables in July 2016. But he has failed to make a mark at Camp Nou and the club are prepared to sell him at the end of the season.

If that’s the case, do Spurs need to sign the 24-year-old? Certainly, not. We are heavily stacked in the midfield area and should splash the cash to strengthen other positions at the end of this campaign.

Despite Gomes being a talented midfielder, Spurs are better without him. The Portuguese international certainly deserves more chances to establish himself at the highest level but at Barcelona, he has found opportunities hard to come by.

This season, Valverde has used the midfielder sporadically, giving the likes of Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, Andreas Iniesta and Paulinho more chances. That has hindered Gomes’ progress at Camp Nou and the player would be desperate to leave the club to start playing again regularly.

However, Tottenham isn’t the ideal destination for the 24-year-old as he would again have to prove himself and fight for his place in the starting XI.
