Tottenham continue monitoring 24-year-old Barcelona star for summer move

As per a report from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (h/t Sky Sports), Tottenham Hotspur are continuing their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes.

Despite boasting of immense talent and potential, Gomes has failed to make room for himself in the Catalan squad. Although he has made 31 appearances for Barcelona this season, the 24-year-old has only spent 801 minutes on the field, which speaks volumes about his lack of game time.

In fact, he has made just 6 starts in the La Liga this campaign so far. The report from Sky Sports has also claimed that West Ham United are harbouring an interest in him but surely, Gomes would prefer joining a club where Champions League football is guaranteed.

With Mousa Dembele’s long-term future up in the air, it goes without saying that Mauricio Pochettino must look to sign a new central midfielder this summer.

The 30-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of this season and although he is a key player for us, it is highly unlikely for Spurs to offer a lengthy extension to a player above the age of 30.

After missing out on winning a trophy yet again, it is important that we inject some much-needed quality into the side.

One might argue that Gomes’ performances at Barcelona have been far from impressive but it is difficult for a player to flourish without adequate game time. Also, given Pochettino’s flair for developing and nurturing young talent, a player like Gomes could reach his true potential at Tottenham.
