As per a report by The Mirror, it looks like Tottenham Hotspur are harbouring an interest in Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. The report further claims that Spurs are eyeing McCarthy as a backup option to Hugo Lloris, who will continue being our first-choice between the sticks.
Our current second-choice keeper Michael Vorm’s contract will come to an end this summer and it goes without saying that we will need a replacement.
McCarthy is a promising talent with immense potential and he could be a great signing for us. The 28-year-old’s current contract with the Saints will expire next summer, meaning this is the ideal time to sign him.
According to Squawka, the player maintained 4 clean sheets in 18 Premier League appearances last term, which is a decent number for a backup option.
A player like McCarthy would not only bring about some much-needed depth to our backline but he would also provide some competition for Lloris, whose performances were a bit lacklustre in the recently concluded season.
Going forward, it will be crucial for us to ensure we have a dependable keeper – even more so if we are to make a solid title challenge next season.
The Mirror also claims that the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and newly-promoted outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers are also monitoring McCarthy, meaning we could be in for a tussle of sorts in the race to acquire his signature.
However, with Vorm effectively on his way towards the exit door, it is crucial for us to sign a new goalkeeper this summer and McCarthy certainly seems like a smart choice.
