Tottenham must stump £45m to sign star English defender from Premier League rivals

Tottenham are amongst a number of Premier League clubs interested in signing Jamaal Lascelles from Newcastle United, according to the Standard.

The 24-year-old had a great season for the Magpies as they comfortably avoided relegation and we see the captain as a replacement for Toby Alderweireld, given that the Belgian’s future is not set at Tottenham.

Lascelles would cost around £45m given that Newcastle do not want to sell him and the English defender is happy at St. James’ Park.

The only way the club could sell him is if they do not have funds to bring in more players in the summer. A club meeting the valuation of £45m might soften the stand for Rafa Benitez and with a number of other clubs looking to sign Lascelles, they might be able to get as much as they want.

The report also claims that Everton and Chelsea are interested in the Newcastle captain with the Toffees planning to make an opening bid for the 24-year-old.

A quality option to have but can Lascelles make the jump to Tottenham?

Lascelles could be a decent player to have on our team. However, Sanchez and Vertonghen are the first-choice centre-halves and it will be difficult to displace them.

However, that is something which Lascelles should aim for if he moves to Tottenham. Should we actually end up paying £45m for the 24-year-old, we would expect him to put in some great performances too.

We have had our troubles in defence with the likes of Kevin Wimmer not shining at the club. So bringing an English defender this time around could work for us.
