According to the Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Barcelona outcast Andre Gomes this summer. Newly-promoted Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers are also reportedly keen on the Barcelona midfielder.
Gomes, 24, arrived from Valencia in 2016 amidst a lot of fanfare but has failed to live up to the billing at the Camp Nou. The Portuguese has scored just three goals for Barcelona over the past two seasons and has played a bit-part role for the Catalan giants in their La Liga triumph this past campaign.
Lack of game time under Ernesto Valverde at Barcelona saw Gomes get axed from the Portugal squad for the World Cup 2018. However, the Spanish champions are now preparing a summer squad overhaul with up to eight stars set to be axed, including Gomes, reports the Sun.
Tottenham certainly need to bolster their central midfield options, with Mousa Dembele facing an uncertain future at North London. Despite Gomes’ struggles at Barcelona, Mauricio Pochettino should throw a lifeline at him as the 24-year-old still has a lot to offer at the very highest level.
If Gomes does want to develop and revive his stuttering career, there is no doubt that he needs to leave the Spanish giants this summer. At Tottenham, the Portuguese will get the platform to prove his ability and would also provide us with the depth we require in the midfield.
It will be interesting to see how much Barcelona demand for the 24-year-old midfielder, given that Wolves are also interested in him.
