Tottenham table formal bid to sign Spanish defender, Levy to go back with a new proposal

Tottenham have made a bid to sign Alex Grimaldo from Benfica, according to radio station Radio CRC (h/t football.london).

The Spanish left-back played 34 times for Benfica last season as he scored one goal and provided four assists. The 22-year-old does have a lot of suitors as Napoli and Borussia Dortmund are also interested in the Spaniard.

The report claims that we had submitted a bid for the 22-year-old but Benfica were not happy with the amount and that could lead to a bidding war among the three sides looking to sign Grimaldo up. The report claims that Levy and team could go back with an improved offer.

Another left-back at Tottenham?

We already have a couple of quality options for our left-back slots with Danny Rose and Ben Davies doing the job for us last season.

It would not make a lot of sense to bring another left-back unless we see a change in roles for a few players or even end up selling a player.

Rose had been linked with a move away to Manchester United while Davies has become our first-choice down the left.

What we should look at is more options to rotate, as Davies or Rose could be played as one of our centre-backs while Grimaldo can be our wing-back next season.

Tottenham have not made a signing this season and it would be important for us to bring someone in.

Grimaldo would not be an obvious choice on the minds of most Spurs fans but if we can get him on the cheap, it would not be the worst deal in the world.
