Barcelona have entered the race for Toby Alderweireld in the January window, according to the Mirror.
The report adds the Spanish side want a new central defender and are interested in the 29-year-old Belgian, who has less than a year left on his deal.
The La Liga giants had earmarked Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt but believe a mid-season switch is impossible for the Dutch youngster, according to the Mirror.
Tottenham have the option of extending the Belgian’s stay for another year but that would activate a £25million release clause for the final two weeks of next season’s summer transfer window, as per the report.
Manchester United were linked with the Belgian in the summer, as per the report. The Red Devils could still make a move for the 29-year-old in January as Jose Mourinho wants to add quality to his defence, according to the report.
The Belgian defender recently claimed (h/t Mirror) that he isn’t thinking about his contract situation:
“Honestly, I am absolutely not thinking about it at the moment.
“I feel good, play a lot right now and, therefore, am happy. We shall see.”

We shouldn’t contemplate losing Alderweireld at all, given the quality he brings to the side. Jan Vertonghen and the Belgian could be one of the best Premier League defensive pairings and we should do all we can to extend Alderweireld’s stay at Spurs.
