Toby Alderweireld was impressed by the character displayed from Tottenham in the 1-0 win over West Ham.

The international break meant the players didn’t have a lot of time to train. The derby wasn’t going to be easy but Alderweireld was pleased with our battling performance at the London Stadium.

The Belgian was quoted by the Tottenham website as saying:

“It’s always difficult after the international break.

“We only get to see each other for a couple of days and then we have to perform.

“It’s not easy but we knew we had to perform and get the three points.

“Like history shows, it’s a difficult place to go (to West Ham), but I think we did well. It was a tough win, we dug in and we had to fight for it.”

Erik Lamela of Tottenham scores

The win was our seventh from nine Premier League games and coincided with our best start to a Premier League campaign.

Erik Lamela got the only goal of the game, but our defence was solid too. Hugo Lloris pulled off a number of quality saves from Marko Arnautovic.

Alderweireld was pleased with our resilience at the back. The Belgian added that getting the three points from this game was more important than how the team played.

Tottenham’s next games are against PSV in the Champions League and Manchester City in the Premier League. Both fixtures will be difficult, but if we play with the same grit and determination as we did against the Hammers, Spurs could come out with a couple of wins.
