England manager Gareth Southgate heaped praise on Tottenham striker Harry Kane after the England captain scored the winner over Croatia on Sunday.
The Three Lions won the game 2-1 at Wembley with Kane scoring a late goal after Croatia had taken the lead.
This was Kane’s 20th international goal for the Three Lions and Southgate was quoted by the Mirror saying:
“Harry’s the best goalscorer in the world, frankly. We’ve huge belief in him. He’s so hungry to lead the team on and further.
“The biggest thing is the connection with fans – I’ve not seen the new Wembley like that. The way it feels with the fans is special. It’s giving us the energy to try to go on and break new barriers all the time.”
England looked down and out after Andrej Kramaric scored in the second half but Jesse Lingard equalised in the 78th minute.
Kane then scored the all-important goal that took us to the semi-finals of the competition, and the England manager spoke about sticking with the captain.
“You’re always loath to take a player of Harry’s ability off. He played a fantastic pass for Raheem Sterling after dropping off deep and turning in the first half.
“I know people have questioned some of my decisions, but Harry’s our main penalty taker, our leader. In 98 per cent of games, his hold-up play and goalscoring is critical.”
The Tottenham star has been excellent for club and country and has helped Spurs to a top-four spot in the Premier League so far.
