Tottenham have exercised their one-year option to extend Jan Vertonghen’s deal till 2020, a club release confirmed.
Vertonghen joined Tottenham from Ajax in 2012, and has formed a formidable partnership alongside Toby Alderweireld in the heart of our defence.
The Belgian is one of the best defenders in the Premier League and will be a Tottenham player till 2020.
The 31-year-old’s season has been hit hard by injuries and he last played for us in the 1-1 draw against Barcelona.
Vertonghen has been rock solid for us at the back, except for that North London derby sending off, and played in only 12 games in all competitions.
Some Tottenham fans were delighted at the news of the extension while others wanted the club to sign him on a longer deal, as they feared losing him.
Good, Eriksen next please???

How is everyone happy with this? All they’ve done is activated a deal to keep him til the end of next season!? Then he’ll leave on a free in a year. Ridiculous.

Yeah. Hopefully Toby can see Utd is a basket case and sticks with us now..?

Means nothing, so after the new year he will be in his last year of this contract
— Dave Oxford (@oxford_dave) December 18, 2018
I think more importantly you need to get poch on a new 6 year deal at 350k a week. Do it

They should have given him a new three year contract with a pay rise. He deserves it. Not Just an extension trigger.

Now give Jan a new contract… one of the best characters at the Club. Both on and off the pitch and deserves a new deal #COYS #THFC ⚽️🇧🇪
