Mauricio Pochettino was happy with the 3-0 win over Cardiff City claiming it was important for the team’s confidence.

Tottenham had lost their previous game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, but there was no New Year hangover as first half goals from Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min got us the three points against the Bluebirds.

Speaking after the game, Pochettino wanted Spurs to start another positive run ahead of our FA Cup tie at the weekend (h/t Evening Standard):

“I think it was so important (to win) and build another positive run.

“It was so important for our confidence because in three days we are going to start another competition, the FA Cup.

“Then we are going to play the Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea.”

The manager added that it was important to get the win at a “difficult” venue especially after Cardiff had beaten Leicester City in their previous clash.

The Argentine further claimed that the win could add some belief in the side to be in a “very good position” in the league.

Tottenham lie six points behind Liverpool in the table and will watch closely as the Reds travel to the Etihad on Thursday. Manchester City lie a point behind us, and it will be interesting to see which side drops points.

Tottenham could benefit from the Reds losing as we would remain six points behind them, and with us visiting Anfield later in the season, there could some fireworks from Spurs in the chase for the Premier League.
