Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty is in contract talks with the club amid interest from Tottenham, according to the Mirror.

The Irishman has been one of the stars for the newly promoted side as they sit 9th in the Premier League.

Doherty has scored thrice in the Premier League and has four assists from 21 games so far this season.

The 26-year-old is a client of super agent Jorge Mendes. The report claims the agent is trying to finalise a deal that will double Doherty’s wages at Wolves.

The defender has looked decent for the newly promoted club this season and it is unsurprising that there is interest from top Premier League clubs.

Serge Aurier celebrates

Mauricio Pochettino has deployed wing-backs during most of his spell at Tottenham but we are playing with a back-four this season.

Doherty would be a decent option to have and would provide additional competition to Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier for the right-back spot. The Englishman hasn’t hit top form for us this season while Aurier isn’t the most consistent defender in the league.

The 26-year-old can play in the midfield too. It will be interesting to see how the negotiations go between Wolves and Mendes.

The promoted club are punching above their weight this season and they beat us at Wembley a few weeks ago.

It might be difficult for Spurs to sign players in January but we need to get some fresh faces to ensure the team does not burn out in the second half of the season.
