Tottenham transfer news: Tottenham to battle Arsenal for Newcastle defender Fabian Schar

Fabian Schar has been excellent for Newcastle in recent weeks as the Magpies have eased fears of relegation.

They were impressive in their come from behind win over Everton at the weekend, and the Mirror claims that Tottenham are interested in Fabian Schar.

The Swiss defender joined the Magpies for a fee of £3million (h/t Mirror) and has adjusted well to the rigours of the Premier League.

The report adds that Tottenham and Arsenal have kept an eye on Schar since his Basel days.

Schar has played 24 games in all competitions for the Magpies this season and has three goals and an assist to his name.

An interesting link for Spurs

Tottenham haven’t spent much in recent windows but could do with some fresh faces in the summer.

Jan Vertonghen

Schar has proved his ability in the Premier League and could be a smart signing, however, it is unlikely he would usurp either Jan Vertonghen or Toby Alderweireld, especially if the latter stays at the club.

Tottenham also have Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth on the books, and the pair have developed well this season.

It will be interesting to see if the London clubs make a serious bid for the Swiss defender in the summer, and a battle between the clubs cannot be ruled out.

Tottenham need to make smart signings, and if Schar is available on the cheap, he would be a decent addition to the team.
