Spurs transfer news: Mauricio Pochettino hopeful on Jan Vertonghen’s participation against Liverpool

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is hopeful of Jan Vertonghen’s return from injury ahead of the Champions League final.

The Belgian defender left the 3-2 win over Ajax in midweek on crutches and a protective cast around his foot and did not play in the 2-2 draw against Everton.

Tottenham finished the campaign in fourth place, one point ahead of Arsenal, however, the Champions League final could have been the focus since the semi-final win over Ajax.

Vertonghen is an important player for the side and Pochettino believed the defender could make a return as the final is a few weeks away (h/t Evening Standard):

“Today he was very down which is normal. It’s the last [league] game of the season, but it’s a lot of time for him to come back.

“But like I always say, I hope to have all the squad available to play but if someone is not available to play then it’s about the team, a collective effort and of course we’re going to play with XI.”

A race against time to regain fitness

Vertonghen isn’t the only Tottenham player in a race against time to get fit for the final.

Harry Kane and Harry Winks are also recuperating, and it will be interesting to see if either of them can face Liverpool on 1st June.

Davinson Sanchez and Danny Rose were also missing from the draw against Everton with minor knocks.

Son Heung-min and Juan Foyth did not play as they were suspended for the clash, but the South Korean forward should be in the frame for a start against Liverpool.
