Jose Mourinho says Ryan Sessegnon isn’t ready for left-back role
New Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that Ryan Sessegnon isn’t ready to play as the left-back.
The Englishman spent a lot of time in that position while at Fulham. Sessegnon joined Spurs in the summer but hasn’t played too many games for us.
He only has two appearances to his name this season and both have been off the bench. Sessegnon hasn’t even played a game under Mourinho, and the manager was speaking about the 19-year-old recently.
The manager was asked if Sessegnon is more of an attacker than a defender and went on to say (h/t Metro):
“In this moment, yes.
“I think Ryan is absolutely fantastic, I have known him since a kid in Fulham. When he comes to the first team in the Premier League it is different to the Championship.”
The former Manchester United and Chelsea manager claimed that Sessegnon could play as “a winger on the left” or on the right.
The manager then compared Ryan to one of the best Premier League left-backs ever, Ashley Cole:
“But Ryan has lots of similarities with Ashley, and he can learn how to defend. In the future I think he can be [a left-back] but in this moment he is not ready to play as a left-back.”
Tottenham’s next test
Mourinho has won both games in charge and it will be interesting to see how we do at the weekend.
Spurs face Bournemouth and the aim is to close the gap on the top four.

We lie nine points behind Chelsea before this weekend’s clashes. A good run should help trim that lead down and hopefully, we can finish in the top four this season.
