Tottenham were in the market for a striker and were offered the chance to sign the 28-year-old. The deal seems to have hit a roadblock with complications arising in the player’s ability to obtain a work permit.
The Cape Verde international signed for Porto from Spartak Moscow in the summer of 2019. He has scored 7 goals in 17 appearances for the Portuguese giants this season. (h/t Whoscored)
Ze Luis is managed by Jorge Mendes, who also happens to be Mourinho’s agent. Mendes has already taken Gedson Fernandes from Benfica to Spurs this month in an 18-month loan worth £3.8million.
Spurs are in the midst of an injury crisis and with Kane out, have no fit senior striker in the squad. With Champions League qualification a necessity, the club has had to turn to the transfer market for solutions.
AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek was linked with a move to North London. That deal is now understood to be unlikely given the costs involved.
It now looks like Ze Luis will not be the answer to Mourinho’s striker woes this January.
